Stuttgart/Tramagal, Oct 24, 2008

Today, the 150,000th Fuso Canter came off the production line in Tramagal in the presence of Portuguese Prime Minister José Socrates and Andreas Renschler, member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for Daimler Trucks. Originally produced in 1963, the Canter is now in its seventh generation and Fuso’s best-selling truck. Production of Mitsubishi products in Portugal commenced in 1980 at the Tramagal plant, which is located 150 kilometers northeast of Lisbon. Since 1996, the Tramagal site has been devoted exclusively to production of the light-duty Fuso Canter for the European market.

The first Fuso Canter to be produced in Europe rolled off the assembly line in Tramagal, Portugal, back in 1980. Located 150 kilometers northeast of Lisbon, the plant in Tramagal was originally opened in 1964 by a Portuguese-French joint venture for the production of vehicles for the Portuguese army. The plant has been owned by Daimler Trucks since 2003.

In 1996, ownership of the Tramagal plant was transferred to Mitsubishi Fuso as the central production location for the Canter for western Europe. Since 2003, the plant has been owned by Daimler, following the latter’s acquisition of a majority shareholding in Mitsubishi Fuso.

The Tramagal plant in Portugal, around 150 kilometers north-east of Lisbon, has a long and varied history. It was founded in 1964 as a joint venture of the Portuguese family-run business Duarte Ferreira and the former French truck manufacturer Berliet. In 1980, the plant began with CKD (completely knocked down) assembly for Mitsubishi Fuso. In the following years the company assembled the Fuso Canter light‑duty truck and other Mitsubishi Fuso vehicles for the Portuguese market. Ten years later, the plant was purchased by Mitsubishi Motors Portugal. In 1996, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation took over the plant as the central production location for the Fuso Canter for Western Europe. The plant became part of Daimler AG in 2003 after the automaker acquired the majority share of Mitsubishi Fuso.

The plant covers a surface of 160,000 square meters. More than 400 employees produce Fuso Canter for around 30 European countries, Israel, Morocco and Turkey. Almost 95 percent of the vehicles are exported. Since 2012, the Tramagal employees also produce the Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid, the hybrid version of the Canter.
