In 1949, the mobile tower crane is invented

In post-war Germany, many parts of the country need to be rebuilt. Hans Liebherr manages his parents' building firm in South Germany. He recognizes the need for tools and machinery for the building industry and domestic construction. Together with design engineers and tradesmen, he develops the first mobile tower crane in 1949. The TK 10 can be transported easily and is simple to set-up at the construction site. It is also the first product of the Hans Liebherr Maschinenfabrik (engineering works), founded in 1949 in Kirchdorf. As successor models follow, crane production at Liebherr picks up pace and the construction company turns into a manufacturer of construction machines.

At the end of the 1950s, gear wheels for the manufacture of gearboxes are hard to come by. In order to produce cranes, Hans Liebherr starts making hobbing machines himself to produce gear wheels.

When Hans Liebherr hires a cable excavator in 1953, he notices the poor power-to-weight ratio. Eight months later, he presents the first hydraulic excavator in Europe - the L300. This is four times lighter than the hire machine. In 1954, series production of the powerful machine begins.

1954 From construction machinery to refrigerators

For Hans Liebherr, the impetus behind new areas of business is sometimes derived from personal contacts. From the branch manager of his local bank, the businessman learns about a refrigerator-making factory that is for sale.

By examining the product, the sales figures and the markets, Liebherr recognizes the enormous potential of appliances. At this time, only one in every ten households in Germany has a refrigerator – and with the economy growing, demand is on the rise. Hans Liebherr decides not to buy the company but instead builds his own production facilities at the Ochsenhausen site in Southern Germany. In 1954, the first refrigerator is built there and series production begins just one year later.

The range of construction machinery is extended in 1956 to include machines for the production and transportation of concrete, which Liebherr builds from that point on in Bad Schussenried.

1958 Expansion in Europe and Africa

Established as a company in Germany, Liebherr commissions the first factory abroad in the 1950s. To gain a foothold in the British and North American market, the company builds a production site in Killarney, Ireland. Initially, tower cranes are built here, followed later by container cranes, shipyard cranes and special cranes. In South Africa in the 1960s, the first company outside Europe is founded. Hans Liebherr sets the tracks for the international direction of the Group.

1960 Start of aeronautical activities

Through participatory involvement, Hans Liebherr's commitment in the area of aircraft technology begins at the end of the 1950s. In March 1960, he sets-up the Liebherr-Aero-Technik GmbH company in Lindenberg, in Allgäu (Germany). From the outset, the aim is to develop and manufacture prototypes in-house. The intention is for the company to advance from being a license holder to a producer of its own components and systems; from an equipment manufacturer to a system provider. In 1996, the company changes its name to Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH.

1961 First site in France

At the end of the 1950s, Liebherr introduces companies in Ireland, South Africa and Austria to expand the organization beyond its own borders.

While exploring locations for a new production site for crawler excavators, Liebherr opts for Colmar in Elsass, France. This central location in Europe is ideal for transportation of the machines. Additionally, it is a great opportunity to break into the local market.

After the cornerstone was laid in July 1961, the Colmar site develops rapidly. As the industries for excavators expand, the design and technology of the machines are enhanced, and the French factory becomes a prominent manufacturer of technologically advanced crawler excavators. The progressive specialization leads to new business areas such as mining excavators, which will be built only one decade later.

1964 Honorary doctorate for Hans Liebherr

More than 30 patents for tower cranes, about 20 for hydraulic excavators and in excess of a dozen for concrete mixers – at many sites around the world, work is simplified thanks to innovations from Liebherr.

Aside from the technological achievements, it is above all the company's performance, too, that Hans Liebherr is reputed for. The technical university in Aachen distinguishes this accomplishment with an honorary doctorate.

1968 A positive balance sheet after two decades of growth

In the second half of the 1960s, Liebherr continues to build upon his success despite periods of recession. The balance of the 20th business year: 400 million Deutschmarks in turnover and 6,000 employees around the world.

1969 From Ehingen to the whole wide world

Liebherr expands not just outside of, but also within Germany. In 1969, the Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH is founded, whereupon it develops into the leading provider of mobile cranes and crawler cranes. Despite tough competitive conditions, Liebherr's order books completely fill up in the ensuing years. Export picks up pace. The research and development department makes its contribution towards a successful expansion. Whether truck-mounted cranes, ship cranes or offshore solutions – the engineers work meticulously at finding new opportunities for deployment and ever-increasing payloads.

1971-80 Global expansion

In 1970, Liebherr takes root on the American continent. Service as well as the proximity to local customers are important to Hans Liebherr and subsequently Liebherr-America Inc. is founded in Newport News, Virginia. The company supplies the North American market with hydraulic excavators, crawlers and wheel loaders and, in addition, represents the following areas: machine tools, material handling and aeronautical equipment.

In 1974, new companies follow in Guaratinguetá (Brazil) and Burlington, Ontario (Canada). In Europe, the company responds to rising demand by introducing new production sites in Austria and Switzerland.

1977 First all-terrain crane

In 1977, the company presents the LTM 1025, the world's first all-terrain mobile crane for combined onroad and offroad use. Its telescopic arm, measuring 24m in length, and a load bearing capacity of 25 tons make completely new areas of use possible. Together with the successor model, the LTM 1030, the crane establishes the all-terrain concept.

1983 Central umbrella company for the Group

The organizational structure took on a new direction way back in the 1970s. The new direction required - amongst others - dividing the company into a German enterprise and a Swiss enterprise.

In 1983, Liebherr-International AG leads the Group as a central holding company in Bulle, Switzerland. To this day, the shareholders of this organization are all members of the Liebherr family.

1984-86 Numerous awards for Hans Liebherr's lifetime achievements

From 1976, Hans Liebherr takes a back seat from the business operations and concentrates on strategic company management. His lifetime achievements as an entrepreneurial personality are honored and remain in the public eye. In February 1984, the university of Eberhard-Karls in Tübingen appoint him as honorary senator. Many other awards followed, among which is the Grand Cross for Distinguished Service of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1986.

1984 Mastering key technologies within: the Group

To meet the high demands of quality for its products, Liebherr places great value on mastering core competences within the organization. For this reason, important assemblies are developed and produced by the Group itself. Depending on the product area, vertical integration within the company is now higher than 60 percent.

One good example is the start of series production of diesel engines in 1984. At this time, Liebherr realizes the potential to optimize the construction machines and designs its own engines that also work reliably under extreme conditions.
