The Holt Caterpillar 40 Tractor is the first production model of the gasoline-powered track-type tractor designed by Benjamin Holt and The Holt Manufacturing Company. The first two prototypes of this model were numbered 1001 and 1002. The model entered into production with number 1003, which was sold for use on the Los Angeles Aqueduct Project in September 1908. These early production Caterpillar 40 Tractors (through tractor No. 1054) would have had the company name, serial number and basic patent information painted on the machines. The Holts would also paint the initials of the customer down the side of the radiator or the customer’s full name across the front of the canopy frame.
